Symbol of Sicilian Kingdom

The symbol of Sicily is called the Trinacria or Triseklion, and it is said to have originated from a myth about three nymphs. According to the legend, these nymphs traveled the world collecting the finest fruit, stones, and soil. They then tossed everything into the sea and created Sicily. This explains why the island has three corners which symbolize each nymph’s foot.

Since the expansion of Magna Graecia across the Mediterranean, the Trinacria has been a symbol of Sicily. Another myth dates back to the reign of King Frederick II; it tells us about a boy who had an exceptional talent for underwater swimming and was challenged by the king. Legend says that while swimming underwater for hours, he discovered that Sicily was balanced on three columns and one of them was on the brink of collapse. The young lad, Colapesce, then decided that he would hold the broken column on his own. It is to him that every earthquake in the vicinity is ascribed, because of his exhaustion from supporting the island.
